Why Herbs?

Knowing the excellent properties of aromatic plants, the fields of Ibiza and Formentera, due to their variety of microclimates formed by their peculiar orography, provide specific levels of mineralization and humidity. This makes the aromatics cultivated and those born wild in Ibiza and Formentera have special properties for human consumption.

Familia Marí Mayans

Master craftsmen since 1880

Familia Marí Mayans, for more than 130 years, has been dedicated to the research of aromatic herbs and the production of high-flavor and high-quality spirits.

These are the result of tests and knowledge, studied and explained from generation to generation, always using the old craft techniques, an unmistakable seal of tradition and quality.

At the end of the 19th century, in Formentera, the first industry processing spirits of the Balearic Islands was born. As is well known, many residents of Formentera combined the tasks of fisherman, farmer, and rancher. But one of them, Juan Marí Mayans, around 1880, had other priorities and with his llaüt made trips to Barcelona to supply the island with objects and utensils that did not exist there, he learned the secrets of the alembic and the production of alcoholic beverages.

Juan Marí Mayans, being an enthusiast of aromatic and medicinal plants, and a student of their properties, developed a vocation for the production of beverages and spirits at that time. Thanks to this careful collection of formulas and recipes from past centuries, and the intensive study of the effects and benefits of the island’s aromatic plants, we enjoy the current spirits produced by the Marí Mayans family.

In 1997, the Denomination of Geographical Indication Hierbas Ibicencas was approved, which on the one hand allows to protect the geographical name, and on the other hand to prevent unfair competition and guarantee the quality of the product.

Talking about Hierbas Ibicencas means referring to the Marí Mayans family.

Evolving with Ibiza

Hierbas Ibicencas are a traditional drink to be enjoyed in a glass or shot with good company to finish a meal or dinner. In Ibiza and Formentera, it is the shot that is usually offered wherever you go. Currently, and due to the evolution of people’s habits, they are also being incorporated into professional mixology and even being used as the perfect ally for various cocktails.

The Original Recipe of Hierbas Ibicencas is having a lot of success worldwide, with a spectacular growth in the nightlife and leisure world where it is increasingly common in clubs, discos and high-level restaurants in the United States, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Holland or the United Kingdom to see people enjoying the Hierbas Ibicencas from the Marí Mayans family, either in a frozen shot or short glass, in a mixed drink or alone with ice.

Important companies from numerous countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Canada, France, Australia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Japan…) are currently inquiring about distribution and promotion of the Hierbas Ibicencas from the Marí Mayans family.

Handcrafted process since 1880

Hierbas Ibicencas are made following the handwritten recipes of Juan Marí Mayans, the creator of the liqueur and founder of the first distillery.

They are obtained using entirely artisanal methods, taking advantage of technological advances in quality control and production standards.

We can differentiate the production processes into distillation, boiling, infusion, and maceration.
